Week 1:  Fundamentals of Computer Design and Organization 

      Monday: 

            Basic class business – syllabi, outlines, rules, etc.

          History of computing – timeline

            Basic architectural concepts 

      Wednesday: 

            PC/Workstation elements

        Chassis, motherboard, CPU, memory, storage, input/output devices, etc. 

Week 2: 

      Monday: Labor Day – No Class 

      Wednesday: 

            Fundamemtals of CPU’s

        Processor speeds/limitations, ALU, concept of the Stack and registers, internal cache, internal buses, etc.

            Overview of current CPU’s

        x86, Intel Pentium, IBM PowerPC, Sun Sparc, AMD Athlon/Duron, etc. 

Week 3: 

      Monday:

            Motherboards

        History and overview of different architecture, buses and bus types, onboard controllers, Introduction to BIOS. Etc. 

      Wednesday:

            Motherboards, chipsets, BIOS, CMOS 

Week 4:  

      Monday:

            Survey of available motherboards, capabilities, uses, etc.  

      Wednesday:

            Concepts of memory, memory types, speeds, packages 
 

Week 5: 

      Monday:

            Memory maps, address space and addressing. 

      Wednesday: Chapter 9, 10 and 14

      Introduction to Magnetic Storage principles, hard drive operation, construction and types.  Format, sector, tracks cylinders. 

Week 6: 

      Monday: chapter 11 and 12

            Storage continued, removable drives, floppy, zip, tapes, etc. 

      Wednesday: Chapter 13

            Optical storage 

Week 7: 

      Monday:Chapters 7 and 8

            Drive interfaces, IDE/ATA/SATA, SCSI, USB, etc. 

      Wednesday: Chapter 15

      Video Hardware, monitors, adapters, ISA, PCI, AGP, resolution, pixels, etc. 

Week 8: 

      Monday:  Chapter 16

            Audio hardware, standards, adapters 

      Wednesday: 

Week 9: 

      Monday:  Chapter 17

            I/O ports; Serial, parallel, USB, IEEE1394(firewire), etc. 

      Wednesday: Chapter 18, 19

            I/O devices, keyboards, mice, joysticks, trackpads, etc. 

Week 10: 

      Monday:  Chapter 19

      Networking devices, Ethernet, cable modem, DSL, ISDN, analog modem, etc. 

      Wednesday:  Chapter 21

      Chassis and power supply, voltages, form factors, power management, cmos, nvram batteris, etc.

            Operating System basic principles
